Wallpaper, Mercy, and Me

Gather ‘round, Internets. Time for Dr. Phil-style confessional.

Perhaps not quite as tawdry as what you may hear there, but I am none-too-proud of myself.

I was asked to write a weekly column for Shoestring Ministries. Doing a mental knuckle-crack, I thought for a while. Sure, I’m moving and all — a little busy –  but the people need me. The message of Shoestring? From the website: encouraging Christians to change their behavior by changing the question. Instead of “What’s in it for Me?” ask “What’s in it for Him?”

Pfffft. Softball. I got this. I really should show the people how it’s done.

That, Dear Internets, is what Proverbs 16:8 refers to as the classic pride before the fall scenario. My version actually says it this way, “Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.” Um, “haughty spirit” table for 1. That was me. Ouch.

A thousand questions. One answer.

A year to prepare. Now the journey begins. If only I knew where I was going.

One year ago, my husband was called into a meeting at work, curious if he would receive his annual bonus. Budgets were tight everywhere, after all. He left the meeting without his job. Budgets were tight everywhere, after all.

After months of fretful living and struggling to trust, he was blessed with a job… 200 miles away. The kids and I would be along as soon as the house sold. Thus we waited. And waited. And waited none too patiently.

Gifted with the clear vision of hindsight, I can see the blessings in God’s timing, but there were moments it felt as if my prayers were simply bouncing off the ceiling. Didn’t the Lord want our family to be together? Didn’t the Lord want us to be financially responsible? [Read more...]
