By His Own Hand

I cried during worship the other day.

You see, I’d spent some time trying to get out in front of God. I’d stressed myself out trying to make things happen … instead of waiting to see if HE wanted them to happen.

Then Sunday came. One of the leaders at our new church plant said, “I wish I could tell you where we were going, but Jesus knows, and that’s OK.” He wasn’t talking about the stuff I was wrestling with, but his words convicted me.

A little later, we sang “He Leadeth Me.” I broke down as we sang the words, “By His own hand, He leadeth me. His faithful follower I would be …”

DECISION TIME

Last summer, “The Decision” broke beyond the bounds of pro basketball and made Lebron James more of a household name than he already was. As many of you know, Lebron is one of the best basketball players on the planet. His nickname, “King James,” speaks to his talent and to the iconic status he’s had since ESPN broadcast his high school games. With his Miami Heat now in the NBA Finals, it looks like he made a good choice to leave his old team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, to join fellow superstars Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh in Miami. But “The Decision” tarnished Lebron’s crown. Many thought he disrespectfully deserted Cleveland and the passionate fans in his home state of Ohio.  

It really wasn’t what he did as much as how he did it, though. In a live 75-minute special on ESPN, Lebron ended months of speculation with a “Me” spectacle unlike anything ever seen. In the days that followed, the Miami hype machine celebrated championships yet to be won and proclaimed the Heat one of the best teams in history before they’d even played a game. The resulting backlash transformed Lebron from one of the game’s heroes into one of its biggest villains.
